Consumers turn to BBB when choosing Roofing Contractors
December 10th, 2008 — Consumer Roof Info
Consumers are more diligent when it comes to choosing a Roofing Contractor, as say, a more impulsive purchase such as a used car. When it comes to a major asset such as a home, any major investment or improvement warrants special investigation into the companies who would provide the services needed. The consumer is showing more reliance on BBB reports when making any contractor decisions. Savvy people, those consumers.
Since 2002, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has released an annual report compiling their Complaint and Inquiry Statistics. In the calendar year 2007, over 54 million company reports were requested by the public. Of those 54 million reports, the number one industry that consumers made a request for was Roofing Contractors with a total of 1.5 million (2.7%) reliability reports.
Roofing Contractors have been topping the report request list in the United States and Canada for a few years now. The trend for those requests are increasing every subsequent year.
Complaints filed with the BBB show that Roofing Contractors have a relatively lower percentage in comparison to other industries in the United States. Canadian complaints of Roofing Contractors do top the list however. We cannot begin to reason why this is, except that it may have to do with the extreme weather that Canadians experience, regulatory obligations, or other factors which make it difficult to effect a roofing solution to the Consumer’s expectations.
Either way, complaints issued against Roofing Contractors to the BBB are rather low. Perhaps this may be due to the diligence mentioned earlier by the Consumer. They are making more informed choices with the tools provided by the BBB and other sources before soliciting work to be done on their roof, therefore lower chances of picking a less than qualified contractor to complain about in the first place.

I agree – Consumers check us out on a regular basis ….. Angie’s List is also another source they use ….
I think that the BBB should be just one small part of the contractor investigation process. Online forums like rip-off report and as previously mentioned Angies list are definitely helpful as well. Fortunately, the roofing industry is sometimes more stable than some other home improvement fields.
