Rebuilding Together Aurora: Annual Blitz Targets Low-income Families

Aurora, IL: Local Contractors Help Repair Homes of the Less Fortunate

Spring is in the air and it is again time for Rebuilding Together Aurora’s annual one-day “blitz” to repair low-income homes in the city of Aurora, IL. The annual event, which usually takes place on the last Saturday in April, will involve hundreds of volunteers, scores of sponsors, and dozens of suppliers in an organized effort dedicated to help low-income homeowners through home renovation and repair.

Rebuilding Together Aurora has been in existence since 1993 and seven homeowners received help that year. This year there are a total of 26 homes scheduled for internal/external improvements with 2 more slated for later this Summer. The homes have serious problems like leaking roofs, antiquated plumbing, and unsealed windows that allow cold air into the home which increases heating costs.

Rebuilding Together Aurora’s organizational efforts is headed up by Emily Stern, an AmeriCorps member, who came on board with the group in September of 2008. Stern works to identify low-income homeowners who have small children, elderly, or disabled persons and need help with their home repair.

Stern works with the small army of volunteers to carry out the renovation projects, develops partnerships with sponsors, and creates general awareness about the group in the Aurora community. The variety of home renovation volunteers is a unique cross-section of the community which include several departments from the City of Aurora, Churches, community groups, and professional trade persons such as roofers, electricians, masons, and plumbers.

Joining the blitz again this year are the staff and crew from Affordable Roofing, a full service roofing contractor based in Aurora. Last year the company tore off and installed a new roof on a two-story home for a single mother and her two children.

The roof decking on a north facing dormer had rotted to the point where it was no longer safe to walk on and it leaked considerably.

Tom Picha, a residential consultant for Affordable Roofing said, “It just had to be torn out and replaced. When we tore out the old roof deck we could see a child’s bed through the wet, broken plasterboard in the ceiling of the room below. It broke our hearts to see this kind of disrepair in a child’s bedroom.”

The roofing company is scheduled to effect repairs to a roof on Leyland Lane in Aurora on Saturday, April 25th.

Picha says, “It is looking like we will be having 100% turnout this year and will be getting help from most of our subs.”

Nationally, Rebuilding Together works to preserve affordable home ownership and revitalize neighborhoods by providing home repair and renovation services at no cost to those in need. Through the support of corporate sponsors, local businesses and the hands-on work of over 200,000 volunteers, Rebuilding Together renovates and repairs nearly 10,000 homes and nonprofit facilities annually with a market value of nearly $100 million. Rebuilding Together has more than 200 affiliates nationwide.
