Solar reflectance and thermal emittance are the two radiative properties used to measure the coolness of a roof.

Solar reflectance is the fraction of solar energy that is reflected by the roof. Some heat is absorbed by the roof and transferred to the building below. Thermal emissivity is the ability of the roof surface to radiate absorbed heat.
