The idea of cool roofs and cool pavement bouncing more of the sun’s heat back into space has been around for years. It has long been known that white roofs in Greece and Spain keep buildings cooler –and help counteract against the urban heat island effect.

Until now, nobody has tried to quantify how much atmospheric cooling could be achieved. In 2004, three California energy experts started to run the numbers. At first they could not believe their eyes — they re-checked them and ran them in different ways with unambiguous results.

You have stains on your ceiling. Water is dripping from a recessed light fixture. Your chimney has wet masonry. A stream of water is running down your wall or dripping from a window well.

If any of these events are happening in your home you must have a roof leak, right? An appointment with a roofer is made. He checks the roof and tells you that some patch work will remedy the situation. The work is done, the roofer is paid but you have the same problem the next time there is a rain storm.

Rebuilding Together Aurora (formerly Christmas in April Aurora) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to helping low-income homeowners, through home renovation and repair.

Its not just the roofs. Every year skilled and unskilled volunteers alike join together in a unique Spring event to repair homes in the Aurora community. Since 1993, the year of the first Rebuilding Day, the Aurora affiliate of the national organization Rebuilding Together rehabilitates and revitalizes the houses of Aurora’s low-income population, particularly the elderly, disabled, and families with children.
