The Obama administration continued its push for a legal workforce Wednesday with an announcement that federal contractors and subcontractors would soon be required to verify that their employees are eligible to work in the U.S.

As of Sept. 8, the Federal government will award contracts only to companies that use the E-Verify system to determine their workers’ immigration status. Companies that also receive stimulus funds must also use E-Verify.

Effective Friday, April 3, 2009, all United States employers are required to use the revised Form I-9 to verify the employment eligibility of all new hires and re-verifications. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (”USCIS”) interim final rule that was published on December 17, 2008, outlines this requirement. This revised Form I-9 can be identified by the revision date (2/20/09) located in the lower right-hand corner of the form.
